Carrickfergus
US Rangers Remembered in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland
In 1992, fifteen of the original Rangers from the 1st Battalion (Darby's Rangers) returned to Northern Ireland.
They re-visited Carrickfergus, the town where the 1st Battalion was recruited and activated fifty years earlier.
At the town, a civic commemoration service was held where the gates to Sunnylands Camp, used for the recruitment process, were located. The service included the unveiling of a permanent memorial granite stone.
These Rangers brought with them an extensive collection of memorabilia, which they kindly donated to Carrickfergus Borough Council. These items became the core exhibits in a dedicated museum which opened two years later.
The museum was recently upgraded to better tell the story of the Rangers from WW2 through to the modern day.
