Pfc. Proudfit was one of the thirty men under the command of Lt. John Murphy who fired the first small arms fire during the "Great Raid" at the rear of the Cabanatuan POW camp on January 30, 1945.

The Raid and rescue of POW's held at Cabanatuan is known for being the greatest rescue mission in American history.
